2 Puzo, Mario The Fortunate Pilgrim (Signed First Edition)
New York Atheneum 1965 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
SIGNED and inscribed on the second endpaper. First, the bad news. This is an ex-library copy. Now the good news: This is an extraordinary association copy: The inscription reads: "To Don Wolfe, Who more than anyone else is responsible for this book being written." In addition, a full-page, typewritten letter, signed by Puzo is affixed to the half-title page: "Dear Don: It was such a pleasure to get your letter. I had thought about trying to find you to send a copy of the book but my ingrained superstition about tampering with fate prevented me. This way is much better. I always tell people about how you got 'The Dark Arena' published by twisting my arm to submit it to Random House after I had given up. And how if you hadn't done so I probably never would have written another line. I don't think I've ever expressed my gratitude properly for reasons which show in this book. But I'm sure you know how I feel. And I'm serious when I say that this new book would never have been written if you had not helped me at that crucial time. Less important perhaps but still a good memory is the fun I had at the New School, the opening awareness I experienced while attending your classes at the New School. I only wish that every new writer starting out could have the same opportunity. I'm enclosing a copy of the book. A very small return. I only hope that some day I can do more. So if there is anything I can do in anyway (sic), I would be very offended if you did not call me. The old Italian honor. Joking but I'm serious. Again thanks for the letter and praise." Don M. Wolfe taught English at NYU and creative writing at the New School. His students included Puzo, William Styron, and Warren Adler. The latter credits Dr. Wolfe for sparking his interest in writing. Wolfe arranged for the publication of several anthologies which included early stories by Puzo and Styron among others. It is not an exaggeration to infer that without Wolfe's influence Puzo's career might have ended with or even before the publication of "The Dark Arena." The history of this copy of "The Fortunate Pilgrim" is most unfortunate. According to a sticker affixed to the front pastedown the book was donated to a college library by Professor Wolfe. It was then defaced with library stamps on all three edges fo the text block as well as the copyright page and a card pocket on the rear endpaper and placed into circulation. It was apparently removed from circulation rather quickly -- there is a card in the pocket indicating that the book was checked out three times in 1976 and 1977. Somehow it has survived with the indicated flaws as well as some shelfwear to the lower edge of the boards. The dust jacket, which has never been protected by a cover has survived but with chips and several tears that have been repaired with transparent tape. The jacket has now been stabilized on the reverse with archival tape and protected in a mylar sleeve. Despite its condition the book, its inscription, and the letter provide an important document that sheds much light on Puzo's career and the importance of a mentor to the writing process.
