1 Sugarman, Tracy Stranger at the Gates (Signed & Inscribed First Edition)
New York Hill and Wang 1966 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket Illustrated by Tracy Sugarman
SIGNED, inscribed and dated (Jan. 1967): "For _______ -- with love and fond memories." Book is fine save for an ink number written on the endpaper. Dust jacket is lightly worn on the lower edge of the rear panel, and the spine is very lightly sunned. Sugarman, an artist-illustrator from Connecticut, spent the summer of 1964, in Mississippi living with a black family and participating in the non-violent demonstrations that ultimately resulted in the Civil Rights Acts of 1965. Here is presents his first-hand account of that summer, copiously illustrated with his own drawings. A scarce and important chronicle of a pivotal moment in American history.
